'Opposites attract' as the saying goes. The animal sculptures of Nicolas Jullien and the abstract lyricism of Steve Dehoux’s paintings lie at opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. A humorous wooden dog stands alongside a romantic abstract landscape. This is the original gamble of this exhibition, which breaks with habits and highlights the contrast. Well, I'm exaggerating. I also see a complementary difference in their work. Steve Dehoux’s evocative paintings invite an emotional escape, while the presence of a wooden dog by Nicolas Jullien brings you back to a comforting reality. From this perspective, it is rather like visiting a zen exhibition where a gluttonous Fido takes the place of the laughing Buddha, and a painting of infinity replaces the meditating Buddha.

Nicolas Jullien, a French sculptor (born 1985), lives in Paris. He creates a bestiary of domestic and wild animals, recognizable by their pared-down, roughly carved forms, which possess a naïve and humorous quality. The grotesque nature of his work recalls a sculptural tradition of deities and other monsters found across many cultures. The difference being that it is not the creature’s fantastical aspect, but rather its ordinary, everyday nature, that is enchanting.

His artistic practice extends into other disciplines, such as music and animation, where he further explores the strangeness of life. He has been composing electronic music since 2005, producing solo albums, film soundtracks, artists’ videos and immersive installations. Working closely with his brother, painter and visual artist Jean Jullien, he co-founded the Jullien Brothers studio, producing animated films, cultural campaigns and music videos. Nicolas Jullien exhibits in Belgium, France and Japan.

Steve Dehoux, a Belgian painter (born 1977), lives in Brussels. For several years, he has been painting an infinite variation on the same horizon line, loosely inspired by the view from his studio. In reality, the paintings are abstract, yet highly evocative. The eye perceives, in the haze of vaporous colors, a semblance of a boundary between shadow and light, which tirelessly evokes the meeting of earth and sky, unless it is the sea beneath the clouds...

The Brussels-based artist exhibited and sold his work independently, without gallery representation, building his own network until 2023, when he began his partnership with Galerie Alice.

“Les contraires s’attirent”, dit le proverbe. Les sculptures animalières de Nicolas Jullien et le lyrisme abstrait des peintures de Steve Dehoux se trouvent aux extrémités opposées du spectre émotionnel. Un chien en bois drôlatre côtoie un paysage abstrait et romantique. C’est le pari original de cette exposition, qui rompt avec les habitudes et souligne le contraste. Enfin, j’exagère. Je vois aussi dans leurs œuvres une différence complémentaire. La peinture suggestive de Steve Dehoux suscite une évasion émotive, là où la présence d’un toutou en bois signé Nicolas Jullien vous ramène à une réalité réconfortante. De ce point de vue, c’est un peu comme si vous visitiez une expo zen avec, pour substitut au Bouddha rieur, un Médor glouton, et, pour remplacer le Bouddha méditant, une peinture de l’infini.

Nicolas Jullien, sculpteur français (1985), vit à Paris. Il crée un bestiaire d’animaux domestiques ou sauvages, reconnaissables à leurs formes épurées et grossièrement ciselées, qui ont un air naïf et drôle. Le caractère grotesque de l’œuvre s’apparente à une tradition sculpturale de divinités et autres monstres peuplant de nombreuses cultures. À la différence près que ce n’est pas l’aspect fantasmagorique, mais l’aspect commun, qui est enchanteur.

Sa pratique artistique s’étend à d’autres disciplines telles que la musique et l’animation, où il explore plus avant l’étrangeté de la vie. Il compose de la musique électronique depuis 2005 : albums solo, bandes originales de films, vidéos d’artistes et installations immersives. En étroite collaboration avec son frère, le peintre et plasticien Jean Jullien, il a créé avec lui le studio Jullien Brothers, produisant des films d’animation, des campagnes culturelles et des clips musicaux. Nicolas Jullien expose en Belgique, en France et au Japon.

Steve Dehoux, peintre belge (1977), vit à Bruxelles. Il peint depuis quelques années une variation infinie d’une même ligne d’horizon, vaguement inspirée de sa vue d’atelier. En réalité, la peinture est abstraite, mais très suggestive. L’œil perçoit, dans le brouillard des couleurs vaporeuses, un semblant de frontière entre ombre et lumière, qui évoque inlassablement la rencontre entre terre et ciel, à moins que ce ne soit la mer sous les nuages…

L’artiste bruxellois a exposé et vendu son travail sans affiliation à une galerie, en créant son propre réseau, jusqu’en 2023, année de son partenariat avec la galerie Alice.
