On the occasion of their fifth show at the Gallery, the mood is one of joy. In times such as these, marked by uncertainty and ominous predictions, Eric Colonel & Thomas Spit propose a return to the realm of the senses, taking a delightful detour into the world of imagination.

For many years, their work revolved around a calligraphic practice which, through scattered and playful fragments of thought, sketched the profile of a generation. Their 2019 residency at the Atelier Pierre Culot marked a turning point in their mode of expression. Text disappeared from their ceramics. The “Citroën” vase became anthropomorphized, and the glazes grew richer. Imagination took precedence over narration. This shift reflects the spirit of the times. It signals, in part, a desire to step away from the turmoil of the public arena and to reengage a more intimate space, in direct contact with one’s own imagination.

For the exhibition, Colonel & Spit present a naïve and colorful bestiary across their preferred media: ceramics, glazed earthenware, works on paper, and sculpture. They told me they wished to further explore the universe of a ceramic kitchen backsplash installed in my home. Indeed, the monkeys and birds adorning it invariably captivate my friends. After all, the emotions of our animal companions mirror our own - yet with a light, soothing touch. Raphaël even considers it a daily antidote to "the anxiety-inducing spin of the morning news on the radio" That alone speaks to the exhibition’s public value.

The duo also invites four artists with highly distinctive universes - artists who inspire them and with whom they share a vibrant creative energy...

• MAITE Y MANUEL
  Born in Uruguay, they currently live and work in Mallorca. Anthropomorphic characters populate their drawings and paintings, like a kind of animated series that expresses, in fragments, their own emotions. For Maite and Manuel, it all starts with a drawing in a sketchbook—the heart of their practice—where they work simultaneously and without speaking to each other. In a fast and chaotic rhythm that nevertheless avoids collision, they embrace disorder, imperfection, and shared intuition. The drawings in the notebook are then transposed onto canvas as a structure for painting and material experimentation. They seek a painting that seems to be in perpetual motion, eternally fresh.
  
  
• ȘERBAN IONESCU
  Șerban Ionescu's work spans sculpture, painting, design, and architecture. Using masterful lines and vibrant colors, playing on strong contrasts, he infuses his works with anthropomorphic and abstract forms, tinged with a cartoonish touch. Born in Romania in 1984, Ionescu grew up in New York from the age of ten. He earned a Bachelor of Architecture from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and taught as an assistant professor at the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, from 2010 to 2016. He has had solo exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally, notably in Antwerp and Tokyo.
  
  
• FRANCISCO MENDES MOREIRA
  Francisco Mendes Moreira (1979) works primarily with recycled materials, oil paint, pastels, collage, and papier-mâché to construct intense, raw images that are sometimes figurative, sometimes abstract. His universe is at once familiar, strange, comical, and melancholic. A self-taught artist, he lives and works in Algés, near Lisbon. Since he began painting in 2003, he has developed an international career.
  
  
• JORDY KERWICK
  An Australian self-taught artist based in France, Jordy Kerwick has developed a distinctive iconography: a fantastical bestiary populated by cobras, wolf heads, feathers, nude women, and vegetation. Pictorially, he employs a wide range of techniques - from acrylic and oil painting to spray paint and collage. His work has been the subject of a solo exhibition at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. It has also been featured in group exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and the Kunstbygningen Engelund Samlingen.   
  
  

Atelier Pierre Culot vs Eric Colonel & Thomas Spit: Round 2

On this occasion, they reunite with the Atelier Pierre Culot for a new collaboration, creating a limited edition series of 14 lamps. Invited in 2019 by Joseph Culot, Dimitri Jeurissen and Arnaud van Schevensteen to undertake a residency at the workshop, the Liège-based duo had found particularly fertile creative ground in transforming the "Citroën" vase into an anthropomorphic sculpture.

This time, the aesthetic adventure continues around the lamp - another totem of the Culot universe. With the complicity of Joseph Culot and Alice, Gallery, Éric Colonel & Thomas Spit painted the shafts of 14 lamps. As in their first collaboration, the encounter between the sober and elegant world of the master ceramist and the grotesque, fantastical universe of the duo gives rise to refined pieces, where the clean-lined profile comes alive with the movement of colorful beasts. Each lamp is unique and delivered with its lampshade.

A l’occasion de ce 5ème show à la galerie, l’heure est à la joie. L’époque étant ce qu’elle est, l’avenir incertain et les pronostics divinatoires, les artistes Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit proposent de réinvestir le sensible en faisant un détour savoureux du côté de l’imaginaire.

Pendant de nombreuses années, leur travail s’articulait autour d’un art calligraphique qui, à coups de petites pensées décousues et drolatiques, dessinait le profil d’une génération. Leur résidence à l’atelier Pierre Culot, en 2019, marque une évolution de leur mode d’expression. Le texte disparaît des céramiques. Le vase « Citroën » s’anthropomorphise et les émaux deviennent plus riches. L’imaginaire prend le pas sur la narration. Ce glissement de l’incantation vers le tactile dans l’art est dans l’air du temps. Il y a, en partie, une volonté de s’écarter du tumulte de l’agora pour réinvestir un espace plus intime, au contact de son propre imaginaire.

Dans le cadre l’exposition, Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit déclinent un bestiaire naïf et coloré sur leurs médiums de prédilection : céramique, faïence émaillée, œuvres sur papier et sculpture. Ils m’ont dit souhaiter approfondir l’univers d’une crédence de cuisine en céramique installée chez moi. Il est vrai que les singes et les oiseaux qui l’ornent font mouche auprès de mes amis. Après tout, les sentiments de nos amies les bêtes reflètent les nôtres, avec en prime une touche légère et apaisante. Raphaël y trouve même un antidote quotidien à « la manipulation anxiogène de la matinale sur La Première ». C’est dire à quel point l’exposition est d’intérêt public.

Le duo invite également cinq autres artistes aux univers très affirmés, qui les inspirent et avec lesquels ils partagent une vitalité plastique marquée du sceau de l’imaginaire...

• MAITE Y MANUEL
  Nés en Uruguay, ils vivent et travaillent actuellement à Majorque. Des personnages anthropomorphes peuplent leurs dessins et leurs peintures, comme une sorte de série animée qui exprimerait, par fragments, leurs propres émotions. Pour Maite et Manuel, tout commence par un dessin dans un carnet de croquis — le cœur de leur pratique — où ils travaillent simultanément et sans se parler. Dans un rythme rapide et chaotique qui évite pourtant la collision, ils embrassent le désordre, l’imperfection et l’intuition partagée. Les dessins du carnet sont ensuite transposés sur toile comme structure pour la peinture et l’expérimentation matérielle. Ils recherchent une peinture qui semble en mouvement perpétuel, éternellement fraîche.
  
  
• ȘERBAN IONESCU
  Le travail de Șerban Ionescu s’étend à la sculpture, à la peinture, au design et à l’architecture. À partir de traits maîtrisés et d’un usage vibrant de la couleur, jouant sur de forts contrastes, il insuffle à ses œuvres des formes anthropomorphes et abstraites, teintées d’une touche cartoonesque. Né en Roumanie en 1984, Ionescu grandit à New York à partir de l’âge de dix ans. Il obtient un Bachelor of Architecture au Pratt Institute de Brooklyn (New York) et enseigne comme professeur adjoint à l’École d’architecture du Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute à Troy (New York) de 2010 à 2016. Il a présenté des expositions personnelles à travers les États-Unis et à l’international, notamment à Anvers et à Tokyo.
  
  
• FRANCISCO MENDES MOREIRA
  Francisco Mendes Moreira (1979) travaille principalement avec des matériaux de récupération, la peinture à l’huile, les pastels, le collage et le papier mâché pour construire des images intenses et brutes, tantôt figuratives, tantôt abstraites. Son univers est à la fois familier, étrange, comique et mélancolique.
  Artiste autodidacte, il vit et travaille à Algés, près de Lisbonne. Depuis qu’il a commencé à peindre en 2003, il a développé une carrière internationale.
  
  
• JORDY KERWICK
  Jordy Kerwick (1982), artiste australien autodidacte résidant en France, a créé une iconographie propre : un bestiaire fantastique peuplé de cobras, de têtes de loup, de plumes, de femmes nues et de végétaux. Picturalement, il utilise une grande variété de techniques, allant de la peinture acrylique à l’huile, en passant par la bombe aérosol et le collage. Son travail a notamment fait l’objet d’une exposition personnelle au Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza (Madrid, Espagne). Ses œuvres ont également été présentées dans des expositions collectives au Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, États-Unis), au Yorkshire Sculpture Park (Wakefield, Royaume-Uni) et au Kunstbygningen Engelund Samlingen (Vrå, Danemark).
  

Atelier Pierre Culot vs Eric Colonel & Thomas Spit: Round 2

À cette occasion, ils retrouvent l’Atelier Pierre Culot pour une nouvelle collaboration et créént une série limitée de 14 lampes. Invités en 2019 par Joseph Culot, Dimitri Jeurissen et Arnaud van Schevensteen, à effectuer une résidence à l’atelier, le duo liégeois avait trouvé, dans le détournement du vase "Citroën" en sculpture anthropomorphe, un terrain de jeu particulièrement fertile. 

L’aventure esthétique se poursuit cette fois autour de la lampe, autre totem de l’univers Culot. Avec la complicité de Joseph Culot et de la galerie Alice, Éric Colonel et Thomas Spit peignent le fût de 14 lampes. Comme lors de leur première collaboration, la encontre entre l’univers sobre et élégant du maître céramiste et celui, grotesque et fantastique, du duo donne naissance à des pièces raffinées, où le profil épuré s’anime du mouvement de bêtes colorées. Chaque lampe est unique et livrée avec son abat-jour.
